Stewart "Stewie" Gilligan Griffin is one of the main characters and former main antagonists on Family Guy. He is voiced by Seth MacFarlane. He is a closeted bisexual. On season 16, Episode 12, Stewie came out as "heterosexual", though with some reservations as he continues to explore his sexuality.
Stewie Griffin started off as a evil genius, bent on taking over the world and also killing his mother, Lois Griffin. He spent his time, devising evil plans and constructing inventions that he would use to cause some sort of a to arrows and would constantly use them in an attempt to kill Lois, which he would always fail at. The crowning moment of this kind of personality was in the two-part episode "Stewie Kills Lois" and "Lois Kills Stewie", featuring Stewie finally succeeding at his plans, finally murdering Lois, and making himself the new ruler of the world. However, it would later come to revelation that Lois had actually survived the attack and got vengeance on Stewie, (although it was actually Peter that killed Stewie). In the end, it turned out the entire two-parter was just a sequence going on in Stewie's virtual reality system. Stewie had done this as a way of him learning about what the outcome of him achieving his goals would ultimately lead up to in the long run. After the events of this episode, Stewie's evil personality was rarely dwelt upon anymore.
Around the time of Season 7, the series featured a lot of jokes about Stewie's sexuality, making implications that he was gay. These became more and more common and obvious as the series went on, to the point where it actually became true. Stewie obviously had sexual desires for males, but less commonly would he express sexual and romantic feelings for women, giving off the impression that he was most likely bisexual.
Stewie is a short, tubby, baby with an abnormally shaped head. His head sort of looks like a football. He has 9 strands of black hair that are combed over his head from front to back. His eyes are big and round and far apart. He wears a yellow shirt and red overalls and light blue shoes.
Stewie Griffin is a smart, clever baby with an English accent. He has both a sophisticated and sarcastic attitude. Stewie used to be hell-bent on world domination and matricide, his first target being his mother Lois. He has constructed advanced fighter-jets, a mind control device, a weather control device, robots, and a time machine. Stewie employs these to cope with the stresses of infant life (such as teething pain, and eating hated broccoli) and to murder his mother Lois, with mixed success at best depending on the objective. His nature and mannerisms are juxtaposed with typical childlike interests and actions.
He has no sense of morals and is okay with causing any kind of crime, no matter what to consequences may be. Stewie engages in other violent or criminal acts, including robbery, carjacking, loan sharking, forgery, and killing off many minor characters. Stewie has been obsessed with his mother's extermination since the beginning of the show, and has commented several times on the subject to other people, such as when he is being interviewed when the family become part of a reality show; "It's not really that I want to kill her... it's just that I want her not to be alive... any more." His matricidal tendencies are primarily as a result of her constantly (and unknowingly) getting in the way of his evil plans, so he desires to kill her so he can carry out his plans without interference. His attempts are always fruitless in the end, usually resulting from various unfortunate circumstances getting in the way, such as her opening a cupboard door as he attempts to blow a poison dart at her, or simply moving out of the way when he is about to shoot her with a crossbow.
This personality deteriorated overtime, once he became more suited with his bisexual tendencies, and has shown on a number of occasions that he is sexually attracted to men as well as conforming to gay stereotypes.
At the beginning of the series, there was no hint of the fact that Stewie was anything other than straight. There were many episodes, where he expressed romantic feelings for female babies. At no point, however, did he ever express sexual attractions for them, but Stewie has a very inaccurate and incomplete knowledge on what sex even is. At the time, he was a completely different character than who he is now. This was back when he was a matricidal villain who wanted to take over the world. After going through character development, not only did Stewie start to abandon his villainous urges and act more like a regular person, but he also began expressing hints of his homosexuality.
Seth MacFarlane stated in an interview "He originally began as this diabolical villain, but then we delved into the idea of his confused sexuality. We all feel that Stewie is almost certainly gay, and he’s in the process of figuring it out for himself. We haven’t ever really locked into it because we get a lot of good jokes from both sides, but we treat him oftentimes as if we were writing a gay character."
Stewie does things such as acting very feminine, saying that he wishes to marry a man when he grows up, dressing up in drag and happily staying committed to the character, and even showing some romantic interests in Brian. This also included stereotypes, such as fawning over celebrities in the way a teenage fangirl would or saying things with sexual innuendo. However, even when he became acquainted with his sexuality, he still expressed interest in females, implying that he may be bisexual. Stewie Griffin is still closeted, having not told his family about his sexual orientation. However, Brian Griffin probably already knows about it and hasn't said anything.
Seth MacFarlane has speculated that when Stewie grows up, he will ultimately become either a homosexual or a repressed, unhappy heterosexual. Seth would later retract that statement pointing out that being a cartoon character, can be neither straight nor gay.
The Gay Side of Stewie
In the episode "Fifteen Minutes of Shame", Stewie said that he didn't like women and hoped that when he grew up, he would turn out to be gay.
In the episode "The Thin White Line", Stewie sings a song that includes these lyrics.
But I'd rather get it on with you!"
At the end of the episode "Ocean's Three and a Half", Stewie said that he was in love with Bryan Adams.
In the episode "Go, Stewie, Go!" Stewie dressed up as a girl named Karina Sunflower in order to get a role on Jolly Farm Revue. Brian was unaware of this and when he saw Stewie, he started flirting with him. Stewie went along with this and when it got to the point where Brian started touching him down there, he quickly cut the act. While in drag, he fell in love with Julie and asked her out, but only being familiar with his alter-ego, Julia turned him down, saying that she wasn't a lesbian. Stewie said that he wasn't a lesbian either, to which Brian replied saying "You know, what even are you, exactly?"
In the episode "Brian and Stewie", Stewie's screensaver for his phone was a photo of a guy's abs.
In the episode "Excellence in Broadcasting", Stewie had a fantasy about his stuffed teddy bear, Rupert. Rupert's head was seen attached to a giant, muscular male body in a speedo. He and Stewie were running around on the beach, getting into a splash fight with each other.
The Straight Side of Stewie
A running gag on the show if for Stewie to throw "sexy parties", which involve him dressing as a sailor and having multiple women in bikinis dancing with him.
In the episode "Dammit Janet!", Stewie fell in love with a female baby named Janet.
In the episode "Ocean's Three and a Half", Stewie fell in love with Susie Swanson.
In the episode "Go, Stewie, Go!", Stewie fell in love with a baby named Julie.
In the episode "Valentine's Day in Quahog", Stewie fell in love with and kissed a female baby, only to find out that it was really Lois, making him completely disgusted to the point where he threw up.
Stewie Griffin has yet to come out to his family, so nobody knows he's bisexual. The only person who has any awareness of Stewie's sexuality is Brian, who seems to have a fair understanding of the fact that he's not straight. Brian has been the subject of a lot of Stewie's sexual remarks and has always been around him, when he acts like a stereotypical bisexual, so he must be somewhat aware of this
A scrapped idea for an episode was "Queer is Stewie?", involving Stewie having a near-death expereince and deciding that he should come out to his family, making him an openly bi character for the rest of the series. However, this episode was neve
r actuallyj made.
In the episode "Turkey Guys", it was Thanksgiving and Peter and Brian were gone. Stewie saw this as an opportunity to come out, and so he got up and started to make his speech to his entire family, but when Peter came in, he ditched his script and nervously said that he was kidding.
